The NBA announced their All-Defensive teams on Tuesday, and the Memphis Grizzlies had Jaren Jackson Jr. make the first team and Dillon Brooks make the second team. Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant reacted to the news on Twitter with a message shortly after the teams were announced:
Jackson Jr. won the Defensive Player of the Year award, making him a lock for All-Defensive as well. Brooks was often tasked with the most difficult defensive assignments for Memphis, and handled them well this season, earning him a place on the second team.
This is the second career All-Defensive selection for Jackson, both of which have been first team. For Brooks, this is his first time making one of the two teams. While there has been a lot of negativity surrounding the Memphis Grizzlies following their first round exit to the Los Angeles Lakers, both Jackson and Brooks are deserving of their All-Defensive selections, and received a congratulatory message from their teammate Ja Morant.
With all of the noise surrounding Brooks and his looming free agency, it does seem as if he will play elsewhere next season; however, his All-Defensive selection is a reminder that his Grizzlies tenure – including this season, included many positive moments. This is something his teammates understand and recognize, even if the expectation is that Brooks will be elsewhere next season.
