Medvedev and Federer again met in late 2018, with the Swiss this time claiming a straight-set win in Basel. Then in early 2019, Federer defeated Medvedev in straight sets at the Miami Masters. A few months later, Medvedev reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open and became one of the best players in the world.
But he never again got a chance to play against Federer.

“Playing against Rafa and Novak is a privilege. I’m disappointed because when I started giving my best and got into the top 10, I couldn’t play against Federer again and I already lost to him three times.

After appearing in just five tournaments, Federer again started experiencing knee problems and he again went under the knife in 2021 August. Federer’s initial goal was to return to tennis at some point during the 2022 season. But his knee didn’t progress as targeted and Federer retired after playing just one doubles match at the Laver Cup.
