Leylah Fernandez has served up another drubbing as she swept past Austria’s Julia Grabher to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA ASB Classic in Auckland.
Fernandez who is coming off a 6-1 6-1 win over Brenda Fruhvirotva in the first round, epitomized the gulf in ranking between herself and Grabher – the 26-year-old Austrian who scored an eye-catching win over Tereza Martincova on Monday.
But with heavy rains continuing to affect play, matches were played on indoors where Grabher played just nine times in 2022. So the match followed the script, with Fernandez plotting her success with her efficient ground strokes that Grabher could not deal with.
The Canadian lefty took a mere 46 minutes to complete a 6-0 6-1 blowout of her opponent who mastered just six points behind the return.
Bonaventure Keeps Hot Run Going
Ysaline Bonaventure is not yet ready to leave Auckland, especially in the kind of form she is in. The Belgian has dialed in since she stepped up on the court at the weekend, scaling two rounds of qualifying and withstanding the challenges of Caty McNally and Rebecca Marino to clinch an unlikely spot in the quarterfinals.
It is the second time in as many days that Bonaventure has fought back from a set down to win after stunning Marino 3-6 6-3 6-3 to reach the fifth WTA quarterfinal of her career.
Bonaventure, 28, produced some great tennis under pressure, particularly behind the return where she won 64% of points on Marino’s second serve. She also manufactured more break points (nine to Marino’s five) and converted four of them.
Not even the ammunition of a powerful serve and an impressive 16 aces on indoor conditions helped Marino’s cause. For Bonaventure, she will be seeking to reach her first WTA semifinal.
