Coco Gauff vs Tatjana Maria Head to Head

World No. 7 Gauff and Tatjana Maria have not played each at any level before this.

Gauff Begins Australian Open Preparation

Coco Gauff did not partake at the inaugural United Cup, and instead focused on playing at the WTA 250 event in Auckland for the second time in her career.

At the last staging of this event back in 2020 (before the two-year hiatus due to Covid), Gauff reached the Round of 16 where she suffered a shock three-set defeat against Laura Siegemund.

The young American has since grown in stature and experience since her last outing in New Zealand and comes to the event as the top-seeded player in the draw.

Gauff, who is entrenched inside the world’s Top 10, will be an overwhelming favorite to add to her two WTA trophies this week.

Maria Produces Inspirational Comeback in 2022

Less than a year after returning from a second maternity leave, Tatjana Maria has produced the form akin to the first time she also gave birth. She won a WTA title in Bogota and reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon.

Maria has had to change her game almost in its entirety from playing style and schedule. She switched from a double-handed backhand and now uses a one-hander, while often traveling the world with her children.

The German has had to sacrifice quite a huge chunk of her time to return to the top level of women’s tennis at the age of 35, but has received wholesome support from her husband.

She is set to begin her 21st season on the pro tour, something that is barely believable for a player who not so long ago looked set to hang up her racket.

Gauff v Maria Prediction and Tip

There were upsets galore on the opening day in Auckland, but Gauff should easily cover the set handicap in this matchup.
